Light in August was written in August 2014 under a setting sun. As summer begins its journey toward fall and winter, the the sun’s rays change as the angle increases. Since I was a kid, I loved watching for that certain day when the sunlight looked “older” or burnt. The summer passing into fall then winter comes with a host of metaphors that are addressed in the piece as well, starting with an allusion to Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky — my favorite composer.
